Gold for 3 Mills Studios!

With the 2024 Olympic Games coming to an incredible end in Paris, and Team GB winning a huge 65 medals, we are reminded of the triumphant games London played host to 12 years ago, and the integral role of 3 Mills Studios.

3 Mills was fortunate to be the home of the 2012 Olympic ceremonies teams, spearheaded by a force of industry powerhouses, featuring legendary directors Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry.

In 2011, the Olympics team moved into 3 Mills and built a gigantic 4×4 metre scale model of the Olympic Stadium. Over the following months, thousands of people would walk through the studio’s gates to audition to be a part of the cast for the four-hour long show, with the cast eventually totalling over 7500 performers and volunteers. On the 27th July 2012, the games kicked off with the opening ceremony – one of the most watched and memorable global events of the year, with stars and spectacle galore.

Two weeks of nail-biting sport later, the London Olympics came to a end with an incredible display of colour and wonder in the closing ceremony, supported by the 3500 performing volunteers, who rehearsed at 3 Mills 15 times.

Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry have evidently loved 3 Mills as a home for their productions. Since 2012, Danny Boyle has shot Trance (2013), and pick-ups of Trust – The House of Getty (2018), and Stephen Daldry returned most recently to direct the award winning Stranger Things: The First Shadow (2023).
